Over Christmas I forced Damien and his parents to watch The Holiday. I know I’ve rambled on about this movie but that’s because it’s one of my favourite rom-coms of all time.
If you haven’t watched The Holiday before, basically Iris and Amanda do a house swap to escape heartache at Christmas. Iris goes to LA and Amanda goes to Surrey in the UK. After watching Amanda’s journey in Surrey I knew I wanted to visit one day!
We were already thinking of doing a quick trip between Christmas and New Year and after watching this movie we decided a visit to see Surrey would be perfect!
Following a short drive out of London, we made our first stop in Shere. Shere is the town where Iris’ house was filmed in the movie and we were keen to get a snap outside it!
Unfortunately when we got there we realized that Iris’ house was actually fake! Her house, Rosehill Cottage, was just a shell erected at the top of the hill near the church in Shere. The rest of the movie was actually filmed in Hollywood.
Somewhat devastated, we explored the rest of the town and met some of the locals.
Outside the White Horse pub we ran into a white horse. This guy who pricks his ears on command and his owner was only too obliging for us to take some snaps on their walk.
There were an abundance of cute cottages with wreaths on their doors in the village. We also made a quick pit stop in at the White Horse Pub which also featured in the movie. Unfortunately Jude Law wasn’t inside!
After our walk around the town we went to drop off our bags at the most beautiful Manor called De Vere.
It’s strange to believe that a family once lived in this huge place. I can’t even imagine to think how many logs of wood they would’ve required to keep these huge estates warm back in the day.
We quickly put down our bags and went for a wander through the grounds of the manor. Although there weren’t many flowers alive, the grounds were truly something else!
Even though it was beautiful in the frosty setting, I can imagine this place would be a spectacular place for a summer party. Parasols and pimms on the lawn with a little game of croquet anyone?
Although I was completely rugged up my nose was turning bright red outside in the cold. Someone really needs to invent a nose warmer!
When the chilly had finally got the better of us we went inside in search of a hot chocolate! The inside of the manor was just as lovely as the outside. All the Christmas decorations were still up which made it feel even more grand inside.
My favourite place in the hotel was the bar area (surprise, surprise!). We spent a lot of time in there playing cards with a wine in one hand and cards in the other. The perfect way to swindle away a weekend!
After a little hot chocolate we went off to watch the sunset at Box Hill. It was really chilly up there but seeing the the fiery oranges and reds in the sky at sunset was definitely worth it!
We returned to the Manor a few hours later and nestled ourselves by the bar. After few more rounds of cards, some delicious dinner and some more red wine, we put ourselves to bed.
When we woke up the next mornings the frost had re-settled over the grounds. I jumped out of bed and got some snaps from outside the bedroom window. It looked so pretty that we had to go outside to capture a few snaps before the frost started to melt away again.
I attempted a few insta-stories but my phone seems to hate the cold and switches off all the time! Does anyone else have that problem? For some reason Mr TUQs phone seems to prefer the cold much more than my phone!
Feeling refreshed, we all piled back into the car and headed back to London. Of course we made an obligatory pub lunch stop on the way home too. It was perfect weekend in the countryside!
If you’ve got a weekend free then I’d definitely recommend scooting yourself down to Surrey for some fresh air and English charm!
Another great option for the perfect weekend away in the Great British countryside is to travel up North to Lake Windermere in the Lake District. There you will find Craig Manor Hotel, a pet friendly hotel in Bowness on Windermere so you can even take your dog along for the journey.
